Sloth: the mother of invention

I’ve noticed this appearing in a few places online over the last couple of days. Without a doubt, this is an act of genius. A beer-launching fridge for those edge-of-your-seat sporting moments when you can’t tear yourself away from the TV but really, really need a beer.

We have the technology so why not use it?

Code Monkey!

When I’m away from my computer for a few days or really busy at work (or both as is currently the case) then things like keeping up with reading RSS feeds, listening to podcasts and posting to my blog take a back seat.

I finally got around to listening to last weeks net@night podcast which started off with Jonathan Coulton’s brilliant song “Code Monkey”. This isn’t new but is one of the increasing things that seem to be passing me by the first time around. Kristen Shirts remix is simply the best use of the ukulele since George Formby hung his up and started flogging his grilling machines . . .

Shopping spree

In an attempt to shift my hangover I went for a wander around Edinburgh this afternoon. This turned into a mini shopping expedition which included some new running shoes ahead of the upcoming Edinburgh 10k and Rat Race. I also had a look around Scotsys as I hadn’t been since their Apple store style refit. I usually only let myself go in there if I know that I’ve left my wallet safely at home. My wallet escaped relatively unharmed on this occasion though as I only purchased a green iPod shuffle. It’s taken six years to get myself a new iPod - the old warhorse 20 gig 2nd generation model is still going strong!

Hair today, gone tomorrow

I’ve just come back from a weekend away with friends to a most distressing sight. I thought that I would check out the write-up from last Fridays weekly coffee morning at Centotre. One photo in particular caught my eye – the elevated group shot. Now not many people usually see the top of my head due to my height but now even Mark Gorman is calling me “follicly challenged”.

Big screen fun

Thanks to a hardware refresh at work, I am now the owner of a 21″ secondary display for my MacBook Pro. Admittedly, it’s a 10 year old CRT behemoth and so heavy that I all but put my back out carrying it up the stairs. Setting it up couldn’t have been easier, although there were a couple of tricks that I needed to learn to get VLCs fullscreen mode to behave how I wanted it to.

Google to the rescue!

While in Tignes last week I had to break my practice of not touching a computer while on holiday. One of my friends had a work-related Word document he had emailed to him but thanks to the locked down web terminals in the bars, nothing could be saved, opened nor any program run. A combination of a USB flash drive and Google documents provided us with a work around. That only left us to find our way around the infuriating French keyboards!

I’m fairly certain that Google Apps will start to become a cheaper and genuinely viable alternative to the Microsoft Office lock-in in the very near future. It only remains to be seen how many people will trust Google with their documents.
